Akuity Platform vs Amazon EKS for Argo CD
Akuity is a multi-cloud, multi-environment deployment, promotion and intelligence platform, built on a proprietary, agent-based Argo CD, Enterprise Kargo and Akuity Intelligence. Amazon EKS Argo CD is a single cloud deployment solution, based on a managed offering of OSS Argo CD.
Detailed Features Comparison
Category
Akuity Platform
Amazon EKS for Argo CD
Solution Overview
Multi-cloud deployment, promotion and intelligence platform (Enterprise Argo CD + Enterprise Kargo + AI Intelligence)
Deployment solution for EKS (Managed Argo CD for EKS)
Cluster & Cloud Support
Supports any Kubernetes cluster (EKS, GKE, AKS, OpenShift, on-prem). Multi-cloud and hybrid environments fully supported
EKS only (requires EKS cluster ARN)
Argo CD Architecture
Distributed, agent-based model
Centralized OSS Argo CD controller
Reconciliation Model
Controllers run inside each cluster
One AWS-managed controller handles all clusters
Argo CD Version
Multiple versions supported
AWS-managed build of Argo CD (currently v3.1.8)
Promotions Workflows
Enterprise Kargo for promotions with approvals and verification steps
N/A. Promotion workflows must be built manually using CI pipelines or scripts.
Non-Kubernetes Delivery
Supported (Terraform/OpenTofu, VMs, HTTP, GitHub Actions)
Non-Kubernetes delivery is not supported
Identity & SSO
Okta, Entra ID, GitHub, AWS IDC
AWS Identity Center only
AI Insights & Automation
Fleet insights and automated remediation with Akuity Intelligence
Standard Argo CD UI
Control Plane Access & Customization
In-cluster controllers give teams direct control to tune, scale, and troubleshoot Argo CD components, with additional visibility and automation from Akuity Intelligence.
The control plane is fully AWS-managed, so users cannot inspect or modify Argo CD components and must rely on AWS support for control-plane issues.
Choose Akuity Platform if:
You run or plan to run multi-cloud or hybrid Kubernetes
You manage many clusters or a high number of applications
You need multi-environment promotion workflows with approvals and checks
You require fleet-wide visibility, operational metrics, or automation
You want flexibility in identity providers
You want maintainer-level support for mission-critical delivery systems
Choose AWS EKS Argo CD if:
You operate exclusively on AWS EKS
You want AWS to host and manage the Argo CD control plane
You require AWS Identity Center for authentication
You only need basic Argo CD deployment features
Key Differences Explained
Architecture
Akuity uses a distributed agent-based architecture where controllers run inside each cluster. This reduces control-plane traffic, isolates failures, and provides predictable performance across large fleets and diverse environments.
Amazon EKS for Argo CD uses the same centralized design as open-source Argo CD: one controller reconciles all connected clusters, and cluster registration requires an EKS cluster ARN. Configuration of the Argo CD control plane is limited to what EKS Capabilities exposes; advanced Argo CD tuning and custom extensions are not currently available.
Multi-Cloud & Cluster Support
Akuity supports any Kubernetes cluster - EKS, GKE, AKS, OpenShift, and on-prem via the same control plane and agent-based model.
Amazon EKS for Argo CD supports EKS-only clusters. Attempts to register non-EKS clusters return an error because the server field must contain an EKS cluster ARN.
Promotions Workflow
Akuity includes Enterprise Kargo, which provides:
Environment sequencing
Approval gates
Verification steps
Integration with Terraform/OpenTofu, CI workflows, and external services
Amazon EKS for Argo CD includes Argo CD for deployments but does not include promotion or environment sequencing features.
Visibility & Automation
Akuity includes Akuity Intelligence, which provides cluster and deployment insights, operational metrics, DORA indicators, and automated troubleshooting and runbooks, giving teams full visibility and control across environments.
Amazon EKS for Argo CD provides the standard Argo CD UI only. The Argo CD control plane runs entirely in an AWS-managed environment, and users do not have access to the underlying pods or configuration. Any control-plane issues must be handled through AWS support, since the components cannot be inspected or adjusted directly.
Conclusion
Amazon EKS for Argo CD is a good option for teams that run exclusively on EKS and want AWS to manage the Argo CD control plane. Akuity Platform is the better fit for organizations that need multi-cloud flexibility, scalable architecture, multi-environment promotion workflows, and fleet-wide visibility. Both solutions build on Argo CD, but Akuity provides the broader platform needed for complex or large-scale Kubernetes environments.
